Location: Southern tip of the South Island, New Zealand
Time Required: 30 minutes
Red Tape/Notes: None.
What’s Nearby?: Purakaunui Falls, Lost Gypsy Art Gallery, Lake Wilkie
Neither of these waterfalls is as impressive as either Purakaunui or McLean, but you get a 2 for 1 deal, so why not? Also, the walk is maybe 10 minutes each way, so it’s not like there’s a major time commitment required. If they’ve had heavy rains in the area recently, these would definitely be worth a stop. I feel like they’re probably worth it even without heavy rains (there had been little rain when I took these pictures so this is what you’d get in poor conditions), but they’re not really a standout considering the many wonders New Zealand offers. In any case, if you choose to go, simply stroll down the very easy walkway and at the end it splits – to your left is Matai Falls and to your right is Horseshoe Falls.
