If you’re lucky enough to be in the area between late October and late April (specifically between Labour Weekend and Anzac Weekend), you’re in for a treat! This gallery is a quirky, fun spot that provides a wonderful balance to all the scenery and photo ops you’ve been (or will be) experiencing during your time in the Catlins. The gallery is located across a number of small buildings, including a roadside bus, in Papatowai and is a showcase of art made from found objects by artist Blair Sommerville. Specializing in self-wound automata, the art is fascinating and whimsical, with the interactive quality making it especially enjoyable. If you’re in need of a coffee fix, there’s an espresso caravan available. And also wifi, if you’re looking to post snaps of your visit to make you the envy of all your friends.
