Location: The Catlins, South Island, New Zealand
Time Required: 30 minutes
Red Tape/Notes: There’s not a whole lot of gas here, so fuel up when it’s available. On the plus side, if you do run out, your walk to the nearest town will probably be very scenic.
What’s Nearby?: Lake Wilkie, Cathedral Caves, Curio Bay
This waterfall is more worthwhile than Matai and Horseshoe Falls – although this also means that it’s more likely to have lots of visitors. The walk to access the falls is only about ten minutes, and the walk itself is very pretty, crossing through lush jungle over numerous small bridges. The waterfall has a dramatic long drop to a picturesque pool, after which the water takes a slight bend and then cascades over some smaller ledges. Overall, a really lovely waterfall (even without recent rains) and a nice hike, with minimal effort.
