Just down the road from internationally famous Jökulsárlón is another glacier lagoon that most people don’t know about. And while it may not be quite as scenic, Fjallsárlón has its own charm that makes it a very worthwhile experience. Pulling into the parking area, you can’t see anything, but if you walk up the steep hill at the end of the gravel lot, you’ll quickly come out onto a ridge above the lagoon, and have a sweeping view of Fjallsjökull (a subsidiary section of Vatnajökull), the lagoon, and valley floor. From here, a number of use trails drop down to the water’s edge, where you’re so close to the glacier that you feel like you could iceberg hop to it. You’ll also have blissfully reduced the number of your fellow travelers, since few people stop here. In the warmer seasons, some tour companies offer boat trips onto the lagoon.
