This lava field was formed around the year 930 and covers over 200 square kilometers. The F578 runs through the field, providing access to the caves Surtshellir and Stefánshellir via a parking area about 7km down the road. Above ground, much of the rock is covered in pretty mosses, rivers carve through the rocks and create canyons and small waterfalls, lakes abound, and you’re surrounded by epic, rugged terrain. This may be our favorite place for photographing the Northern Lights; it’s far from sources of light pollution, there’s something pretty in every direction, and the lake and rivers create nice opportunities for reflections.
