Though not as well-known as the kelp beds at Catalina, or even in La Jolla, the Palos Verdes peninsula has some nice kelp beds, too. Once threatened by an over-population of sea urchins, the kelp forests have recovered thanks to human intervention (helping to remove the sea urchins) and the reintroduction of the adorable (and helpful) sea otter – who eat 20% of their body weight in sea urchins per day. You can dive the kelp forests and see the marine life they harbor up close and personal in several locations along the Palos Verdes coast. With depths ranging from 30 – 50 feet, you can do long dives and they make a great combo with the nearby Avalon Wreck.
