Lee Vining Area

Lee Vining is notable as the town at the intersection of the Tioga Pass Road (the northern exit of Yosemite, through Tuolomne Meadows) and Highway 395, which travels the length of the Eastern Sierras. You can certainly refuel and pick up supplies here, but be aware that gas prices are phenomenally high. The area is blessed with an abundance of outdoor opportunities – not only is Yosemite a stone’s throw away, but the nearby June Lake area offers opportunities for summer activities like swimming and boating, an active ski area in the winter, and lovely fall colors – many of the rivers, lakes, and streams in the area also host trout, making the region a great place for fly fishing. Just north of Lee Vining, the drive up Lundy Lake Road is a worthwhile way to spend an hour or two in the fall, and spring through fall the hike up Lundy Canyon is sublime, with aspen groves, mirror-glass beaver ponds, and cascading waterfalls.
Where to Stay
We typically camp when we’re in the area; many of the wilderness areas book up quickly, though, so plan ahead and pay attention to the dates when sites are available for making reservations. If you’re looking to do sunrise photography around the June Lake area (Silver Lake is a particularly nice option), there are some great campgrounds within walking distance of the lake that are an easy and pleasant option.
