First off, it’s pronounced “hway” not “hyew” like we would say in English. Now that that’s out of the way, we can move on. Hue was the national capital of Vietnam from 1802–1945 and the seat of the Nguyen Dynasty emperors (which dominated from 17th to the 19th centuries). This legacy produced the 19th Century Citadel, which encompasses the Imperial City and Forbidden Purple City (of which little current remains – reconstruction efforts are apparently in process). The city is on the banks of the Perfume River and is home to the lovely Thien Mu Pagoda, the city’s symbol.
