Epic Travel → North America → The Northeast → Massachusetts → Crane Beach
Location: Crane Estate, Ipswich, Massachusetts
Time Required: 1 hour to have a quick wander around the trails, more time if you’d like to actually enjoy the beach or visit the wildlife refuge
Red Tape/Notes: Open year-round, daily, from 8am – sunset
What’s Nearby?: Castle Hill, Salem, Connors Farm
More than 5 miles of trails and boardwalks wind among the dunes and salt marshes of Crane Beach, which (for any of you bird lovers) is also one of the most important nesting sites for the threatened piping plover. It’s also a very pretty beach if you’re just looking for a beach to visit. It was raining when we stopped by to have a look, which significantly dampens a visit to the beach (yes, the pun was intended…I have to amuse myself somehow) but it was still worth popping by since we were on our way to Castle Hill anyway. If you have a boat, you can also stop at the Crane Wildlife Refuge. Visit the Crane Beach and Crane Wildlife Refuge websites for more information.
