What’s Nearby?: Calico Hills, Red Rock Canyon Scenic Drive

This canyon is probably the easiest technical route in Red Rock Canyon and is a nice introduction to the area. There’s one section of the approach that’s kind of a bear – you ascend around 1500 feet in under a mile. Other than that the route is a rather pleasant hike with some pretty scenery, particularly if you take the option of hiking to the saddle for the great overlook of Ice Box Canyon and Bridge Mountain. The approaches to some of the rappels involve some exposure that could be uncomfortable for some people, and some of the downclimbs are on the more challenging side (but these have typically been rigged with anchors by people who were too uncomfortable to make the climbs).
