Location: Asheville, North Carolina
Time Required: 30 minutes to several hours depending on the length driven.
Red Tape/Notes: No fee to use the parkway; road is not maintained during winter so be aware of road conditions (though I’m not really sure why you’d be choosing to drive it at this time of year)
What’s Nearby?: Biltmore
The Blue Ridge Parkway is one of America’s great highways, linking Shenandoah National Park to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park via a 469 mile scenic road. Driving even a portion of the parkway is a great way to see some of the beautiful scenery of the area, and it conveniently runs right past Asheville. Particularly popular in the autumn, it covers a wide range of elevations so if you’re willing to drive it for a bit, you can almost guarantee seeing fall color somewhere along it during October. If you’re in the area and have extremely limited time (or a pair of broken legs or something along those lines) but want to see some nice scenery, this is a good option.
