West Iceland
Epic Travel → Europe → Iceland → West Iceland
This part of the country feels wonderfully remote while being surprisingly accessible. The majority of people skip the Borgarjordur area and do a long day tour around the Snæfellsnes Peninsula from Reykjavik on a giant tour bus. Needless to say, this is not the approach we would recommend. Aside from the fact that Borgarjordur is worth visiting (particularly if you’re into caves), and the normal downsides of touring with groups (you can never escape the mass of people, and you’re not at your own pace) there’s an additional downside in this area of the country: there are loads of random cool things to see and explore that won’t be on your list and you’ll just stumble across them. Take the abandoned house shown below, for example. Or the scenery we enjoyed while searching for a cave our friend told us about on the road past Snæfellsjökull (we never found it, but we did stop at Songhellir). These are sometimes the most memorable parts of a trip and West Iceland is full of them.
