Víðgelmir is Iceland’s largest cave, and they’ve invested in the infrastructure and marketing to allow it to be an accessible tourist destination for the masses. This diminishes the experience for us somewhat (I’d generally rather visit a mediocre wild cave than a great show cave) but it’s still a cool cave to visit. And luckily they offer an extended tour option that lets you go beyond the walkways, deeper into the cave, where the cave is still in its original condition. You’ll do the first part of the tour with the “cave explorer” group and then virtually all of them will turn around and go back and the handful of people who are interested in really seeing a cave will continue on with the “cave master” group.
