Location: Southwest Iceland

Time Required: 4 hours – 1 day

Red Tape/Notes: Please note that you are unlikely to see the Northern Lights from here – I feel ridiculous saying this, but you want to get away from city lights to see them (just like seeing stars). Although if the aurora is spectacularly good, the city will occasionally shut off their street lights so people can enjoy them.

What’s Nearby?: ThingvellirGullfossGeysir, Faxi, Friðheimar, HrunalaugEldhestar

Most people base themselves in Reykjavík, and I feel like you should probably spend at least a little time here if you’re in Iceland, but I definitely don’t think staying in Reykjavík is the way to go. But then, we typically try and flee large cities as quickly as possible when we’re traveling. But as cities go, Reykjavík is pretty great. Its streets and buildings have that classic historic look that stands the test of time, and there’s the oft-photographed Hallgrímskirkja. Not to mention actual restaurants and night clubs if you’re keen on civilization after spending a long time in the field.
