The aptly named Grænavatn (it means “green lake”) was formed by a volcanic crater and gets its characteristic color from a combination of the high sulphur content in the water and the depth of the lake (which is considerable, given its width – it’s 45 meters deep and only a few hundred meters wide). You can see the effect of the lake’s depth on the color easily, as the shallow pale green water at the rim drops precipitously away to dark blue-green depths. Given its size, the circumference of the lake can be hiked in under 20 minutes, making this a nice option for a quick stop to stretch your leg
