Mossy Lava Rocks
Epic Travel → Europe → Iceland → Southern Iceland → Mossy Lava Rocks
Location: East of Vík, Southern Iceland
Time Required: 10 minutes
Red Tape/Notes: Find a safe place to pull over, hop out and take some pictures. Try not to step on the moss – it’s easily damaged and recovery is a long process for it.
What’s Nearby?: Seljalandsfoss, Gljúfrabúi, Thórsmörk, Merkurker, Gígjökull, Fimmvörðuháls, Stakkholtsgjá
There’s no particular spot for these, they’re just randomly all along the road on the southern coast, but they’re amazing. Somehow barren fields of lava rocks have been overtaken by a carpet of soft, squishy green moss. I photographed this particular field about an hour east of Seljalandsfoss. You should make an effort not to walk on the moss (rock hop or use existing trails) because it gets damaged quite easily and takes years to recover (poor little mossy rocks!).
