Location: Skógar/Vík area, Southern Iceland

Time Required: 1 hour (15-20 minutes each way to hike to the pool, plus however much time you want to swim)

Red Tape/Notes: There are changing facilities but they’re fairly small, so be prepared to change under your towel. Or hike out soggy.

A pool was first constructed here in 1923, in a delightful spot deep in a valley where warm water seeps out of the rock; it was originally used to teach Icelanders to swim. The pool has been remodeled since, and is kept up by a team of volunteers, who had to work especially hard after the Eyjafjallajökull eruption, when the area was entirely blanketed in ash. But thanks to their efforts, this little gem remains accessible and the water is a consistent, comfortably warm temperature year round. The trailhead is only a short detour from the ring road, making this a great, less-visited stop.
