Hueco Wall was a newer find for us; we were looking for a change from climbing at Malibu Creek and Echo Cliffs, so we figured we’d check out some of the Backcountry Crags. This climbing area consists of various smaller crags spread out in a basin, all of which can be seen from the fire road running through the area. Hueco Wall is the furthest crag, and the approach takes about an hour, but the hike is very scenic. We saw lots of people hiking in the area, and no climbers. For the most part, the crags have intermediate to harder climbs (10 – 12 range), with Hueco Wall having the largest selection of easier climbs, with numerous 10a and 10b routes, several of which are 3 and 4 star climbs. All of the climbs are fairly short, and we’ve spent entire, lovely days working our way from left to right, climbing every route we could until we were running out of daylight (and energy). We’ve never seen another person there. It’s glorious.
