The Ruby E. began her life in 1934 as a 165 foot Coast Guard cutter, built specifically to pursue rum runners operating up and down the west coast during prohibition. In classic form, prohibition ended before she was completed, but the Coast Guard found use for her on anti-submarine patrols during World War II and she had a long and productive life before being intentionally sunk in 1989 as an artificial reef. She now provides a very picturesque addition to San Diego’s wreck alley, sitting upright and intact on the ocean floor, covered in barnacles and hosting a wealth of sea life. Overall an excellent dive, particularly if you have nice visibility.
