♦ Intrepid Top Pick!
Location: Balboa Park, central San Diego
Time Required: ~2 hours
Red Tape/Notes: Honor system self-pay post ($2 per person) just past the gate. Parking can be rough because you share the parking lot with people visiting other spots in Balboa Park, so it’s best to arrive early (before 9am on weekends). Don’t go on the 1st or 3rd Sunday of the month, since the club holds bi-monthly shoots on these days (unless you’re participating in the shoots, obviously). For more information, including directions to the range and a map of the course, visit this webpage.
What’s Nearby?: Ruby E Wreck Dive, Sunset Cliffs Sea Caves, Pappy’s Point Sea Caves
If you’re not into archery then this isn’t all that exciting, but if you are, this place is a great little hidden gem! Amidst the museums and cultural attractions of Balboa Park is the coolest little 3D walking archery range we’ve come across. There’s a set of fixed distance targets at the front for adjusting your sights, and then you hike off on a trail to your right and will meander along a pleasant hillside interspersed with wooded and open areas, coming across targets at various distances in different settings. There are 28 targets on the range, but only targets 15-28 are open all the time (the first 14 are open only during the bi-monthly shoots), so you’ll hike to the farthest point in the loop trail (under the bridge) and then work your way back towards the front. It’s a great way to get in some target practice while enjoying the outdoors.
