Hidden Valley Falls

Location: Cayo District, Western Belize
Time Required: ~1 hour
Red Tape/Notes: Visit the falls in combination with other sites in the area.
What’s Nearby?: Rio Frio Cave, Rio On Pools, Caracol, Pacbitun
It’s common for tours to combine a visit to Caracol with a stop at Rio Frio Cave and Rio On Pools. Our poor tour guide was stuck with us, which means he got roped into more than he had bargained for, since in casual conversation he mentioned that the tallest waterfall in Central America was nearby. To which I (obviously) responded “Oh that’s awesome! Can we go there??”; the poor guy squirmed uncomfortably but finally relented, especially when it occurred to us that we could fly the drone over and try to get some cool footage. The drive is longest part of the time commitment, since it’s 4 miles down a rather rutted dirt road, but once you’re there, it’s only a few steps to the lookout platform, which extends over the edge of the canyon providing beautiful valley views and a view of a portion of the 1600 foot tall falls (which are also known as “Thousand Foot Falls” despite it being something of a misnomer).
