Laos

Epic Travel → Asia & the South Pacific → Laos

We were drawn to Laos from the first time we saw its spectacular karst mountains from across the border in Vietnam – it’s like they were calling us to come and explore the caves they were hiding. So we came – but we got a lot more than caves in the bargain. With beautiful waterfalls, a rich culture, and a fascinating history, the story of the Laos people is as varied and beautiful as its topography. It’s an easy country to visit – the people are warm and friendly, accommodations are pleasant and easy to find, and an increasing focus on tourism continues to bring about improved infrastructure. Some places remain difficult to access, but in a place like Laos, the effort is worth the reward.

Where to Stay

Things are changing quickly in Laos, so doubtless there will be various other options available within months of our return – because of this we generally recommend using a travel agency to book your hotels, since they’ll have an easier time figuring out what’s available (we always use Indochina Pioneer); they can also help you book tours, guides, private drivers, etc. However, we were very happy with all the places we stayed and would recommend any of them:

Thakhek – Riveria Thakhek

Kong Lor Area – Spring River Resort

Vientiane – Lao Orchid

Xiengkhoang – Auberge Phou Phadaeng (no website, but this place is great! Little bungalows on a hilltop with beautiful views and a nice restaurant)

Luang Prabang – Villa Chitdara
