Lone Pine to Bishop

Lone Pine to Bishop

This area is home to some of California’s finest hikes. The most well-known hike in the area is Mt. Whitney, but it’s low on my list of favorites, given options like Big Pine Creek and the Bishop Pass trail. Not intereseted in altitude? No problem, you can find interesting rock features and climbing opportunities in the Alabama Hills (not to mention some of the finest free dispersed camping you can imagine). You can also find some of the most easily accessible and lovely fall color landscapes in the Bishop area by driving highway 168, which will take you through Aspendell to Lake Sabrina.

Where to Stay

We typically either camp when we’re in the area (to optimize proximity to a trailhead), or stay in Bishop (since we have to pick up backcountry permits at the White Mountain Ranger Station). If you have time and like historic buildings, though, you should check out the Winnedumah Hotel, a cute bed and breakfast built in 1920.
