Home of the Inca, the Andes, and the world’s largest repository of recipes using corn (seriously, it’s hard to find a dish that doesn’t involve corn…there are even desserts made from it), Peru is even more beautiful in real life than it looks in pictures. I spent my childhood obsessed with the Inca and lost in daydreams of visiting places like Choquequirao and Machu Picchu, so it could easily have been a slight let down after such a build up. It wasn’t. Spending one vacation here just makes you desperate to come back, because there’s so much that you didn’t get to see, so many secrets left to uncover and places to explore. And sometimes I daydream about bread from Oropesa.

Where to stay

There are seemingly endless options for places to stay in the Cusco/Machu Picchu area, since it’s such a popular tourist destination. We opted for higher end boutique accommodations, which were all a wonderful combination of character, location, and comfort, and we would highly recommend any of them. Random side note: Casa Cartagena is apparently good enough for the Kardashians, since a couple of them were checking in the day we were checking out.
