If you want to see how virtually everything in the area is being heated, take a quick detour at Deildartunguhver, Europe’s most prolific hot spring (it produces 180 liters per second (!!) of boiling water). Water from here is piped as far as Akranes, 65 km away, and heats most of the town. Other than loads of steam, some vigorously bubbling springs, and some pipes carrying the hot water around the countryside, there’s not a whole lot to see here, but it’s nice to stop and stretch your legs a little. There was also an adorably chubby border collie when we visited, which was pretty great.
