On your way out of Hilo, just past the seven mile marker, you’ll see a sign for a scenic route. Take it. It’s a very nice drive, though pretty jungles and with occasional water views. More importantly, it brings you to Onomea Bay and the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden. Wander through the garden, appreciating the birds and flowers, the beautiful bay views (Onomea Bay is really lovely, although I like the view from outside the park – the view from the scenic route – better), and Onomea Falls. This is the best botanical garden on the island.
