Hraunfossar is a lovely set of waterfalls that are rather different from your typical waterfalls – these are formed from water seeping through a lava field (Hallmundarhraun lava field, specifically), and overflowing along the edge of a long cliff line into the Hvítá River. The series of waterfalls – sometimes dropping over a sheer edge and sometimes cascading down steps – is extremely picturesque and there are various viewpoints for the falls. You can also hike a use trail down to the river and hike along the waterway to view the falls from there. Barnafoss can be accessed from the same parking area.
