Location: The Catlins, South Island, New Zealand

Time Required: 1 hour total

Red Tape/Notes: The “blowhole” doesn’t spout water, so don’t wait around for a spectacular display. The joy is in the journey on this one, with the blowhole being a somewhat interesting variation during the hike.

What’s Nearby?: Nugget PointPurakaunui FallsMatai and Horseshoe Falls

As mentioned in the synopsis, this isn’t really a blowhole so much as it’s sort of a sea cave with a thunderous water surge. I guess it’s kind of cool, but it’s hard to see into the “blowhole”, and there’s no amazing water spout that shoots up. To be fair, the ground does rumble some as the water surges through it, and it is fairly far inland (200m) for a sea cave, but given all the other cool stuff you’ve seen or are about to see…meh. On the plus side, the walk is really lovely, and it only take around 15 minutes (one way). If you’re here at sunset, like we were, then so much the better. I would say the wonders of the “blowhole” are on par with the walk itself.
