Our previous visit to Mt. Cook consisted of a single afternoon due to time constraints, so we returned with the intention of doing more. Which we did, but unfortunately we had a low clouds obscuring visibility and overnight snow, so we had to alter our plans somewhat. So there will be another trip in our future! There’s a lot to see and do here, including what’s reputed to be the South Island’s best day hike, the Hooker Valley Track. We haven’t done it yet, so we couldn’t tell you. I can tell you that the whole area is absolutely beautiful, particularly when it’s clear, as it was on our first trip. There’s a great little camping area with basic facilities and a variety of trails that are great for a stroll in between longer hikes, as well as a nice restaurant and some proper lodging if you’re not sleeping in a van or tent.
