Oamaru is a nice stop for a little civilization and/or lunch, with some of the best preserved heritage buildings you can find in New Zealand. It was a prosperous town in the late 1800’s due to successful gold mining and timber milling, and the result was a heap of lovely Victorian-era buildings made from local limestone. There’s still nice shopping on the Main Street, there’s a neat Steampunk Museum and playground, and the Oamaru Harbor boasts a colony of blue penguins.
