Location: Southeast of Cusco

Time Required: 2 hours

Red Tape/Notes: We booked our visit to Oropesa through Kuoda Travel (we booked everything through Kuoda actually), and I’m not sure how else you could do what we did (actually participating in baking the bread); it doesn’t seem to be very common.

Oropesa is a historic community, famous throughout Peru for its artisan bread. Our fabulous travel agency organized entry to a family owned bakery for us, where we hung out in their kitchen and watched as they made the dough and formed the bread rolls, watched as they prepped the massive stone oven, and then we got to help with the baking. According to the owner of the bakery, I was better at it than Tom, although I definitely messed up a couple of the rolls. You’ll definitely leave with an appreciation for how the bread is made – especially when you realize that they make the bread every day, starting at something ridiculous like 3am (no weekends or holidays off!!). At the end, they’ll let you try some freshly baked bread and it’s so delicious that you’ll end up buying some to take with you and then you’ll eat so much bread that you’re basically sick but you can’t stop eating it because it’s so delicious. At least, that’s what happened to me. I’m sure you’ll have more self control.
