Belize is a beautiful country with a rich history, combining Central American and Caribbean culture along with interesting cultural artifacts from its time as British Honduras (it achieved independence in 1981, though it remains a Commonwealth realm). The country is well known for the Maya archaeological sites that can be found throughout its jungle interior, including Caracol and Xunantunich, and for the extensive system of caves and cenotes that can be found throughout much of the countryside. On the coast, it hosts an extensive barrier reef system which supports a great diversity of marine life and offers great diving; its coastal waters are also home to the famous Great Blue Hole, one of the best known dive sites in the world.

Where to stay

There are lots of options for places to stay in Belize, ranging from all-inclusive resorts to hostels. We opted to split our time between the coast and the jungle, staying at boutique resort-style hotels in both. In Placencia we stayed at Chabil Mar and in the San Ignacio area we stayed at Ka’ana and were very happy with both – just be aware that places like this are not really used to the intrepid traveler, so you may have to push or make your own arrangements if you want to keep a very active schedule and/or do more unusual activities.
