There’s certainly more to Guatemala than Mayan ruins, but that’s all we’ve had time to see so far. And while it’s likely that every visitor to this country makes a stop at Tikal, it is an amazing complex and well worth spending an entire day. Fewer people visit nearby Yaxha, which also benefits from an extremely picturesque location. Both sites have large natural areas which provide great opportunities for spotting wildlife (mainly birds and monkeys), and are located near enough to the border with Belize that you can visit archaeological sites in both countries on the same trip; crossing the border between Guatemala and Belize is fairly easy.
