Epic Travel → North America → The South → North Carolina → Highlands

Highlands is aptly named, being one of the highest towns east of the Mississippi (people from Denver will scoff at this…) with an elevation of 4,118 feet. More interestingly, it’s located in a temperature rainforest and is therefore home to a fantastic array of plant life. The town itself is adorable – it’s prospered as a mountain resort town and has a ton of charm, and of course features beautiful fall colors in October. We came here hunting waterfalls and fall colors and found both in spades.
