Mammoth Lakes Area

Most people know this area as a skiing destination (and we love to ski here) but it’s also very popular in the summer as a boating destination. Don’t worry, though – it’s easy to escape the crowds on some more intrepid excursions. The hike up the McGee Creek Trail is fantastic, leading to some awesome mountain lakes with great fly fishing opportunities and beautiful mountain scenery, and the columns at Lake Crowley are a fascinating and little-known geological marvel. For an easily accessible hike, the Convict Lake loop offers fall colors, impossibly blue waters, and is regularly re-stocked with fish.
Where to Stay
In winter we stay in Mammoth (to make it easy to hit the slopes as early as possible), but the rest of the year we typically camp when we’re in the area. There are numerous campgrounds in the area and the large number of primitive camping areas available.
