Sequoia National Forest

I kind of feel like Sequoia National Park was made for tourists, and they kept Sequoia National Forest for the locals. This area is jam-packed with campsites and beautiful scenery, but also has accessible towns with colorful histories thanks to the area’s mining roots. The Kern River Valley is famous for fly fishing and rafting, but it also hosts some fabulous canyoning, climbing, and hiking routes.

Where to Stay
We typically camp when we’re in the area; many of the wilderness areas book up quickly, though, so plan ahead and pay attention to the dates when sites are available for making reservations. Kernville also hosts a number of lodging options, just be aware that you’ll have to drive up to an hour to reach some of the more interesting trailheads.
