Valahnúkamöl
Epic Travel → Europe → Iceland → Southwest Iceland → Valahnúkamöl
Location: Reykjanes Peninsula, Southwest Iceland
Time Required: 10 minutes – 1 hour
Red Tape/Notes: The road should be passable for standard vehicles. Best viewed in the morning to have light on the rock pillars, rather than backlighting them.
What’s Nearby?: Reykjanes Lighthouse, Gunnuhver, Kleifarvatn, Seltún, Grænavatn, Krýsuvíkurberg, Blue Lagoon, Reykjanes Nature Preserve
If you drive past Gunnuhver and continue on the road that leads southwest, it will end in a parking area only steps from the water. From here, you get excellent views of the coast, and some very scenic rock pillars that feature heavily in photographs of the area. Cliffs rise up next to the parking area, and you can hike up for better views of the area – these cliffs are where the original Reykjanes lighthouse was built (replaced by the current one in the early 1900’s). The cliffs were closed in late 2016 due to safety concerns, and I’m not sure of the current status. The closed area would be signed. Regardless, you can visit the lower area.
