Various agencies offer glacier tours from Skaftafell, which sits at the foot of the Vatnajökull, providing easy access to hike up and onto the glacier. And why limit yourself to hiking when you could hike AND climb? That would be silly, right? So of course we opted for ice climbing, and we had a beautiful day. It wasn’t really prime ice climbing season when we were here, so our selection was somewhat limited and we weren’t able to drop down any crevasses (they become rather unstable late in the season, and we were here in October), but it was still a great day and provided beautiful views.
